Photograph of Stella Gill coke works (1920-1962).
The plant was in poor condition and was closed for a complete renovation shortly after being taken over by the National Coal Board.
The plant originally consisted of 50 Simon-Carves regenerative ovens, replaced in 1935 by 50 Still semi-silica ovens (19 and 1/2 inches wide). Coal from the neighbouring South Pelaw and Pelton collieries, washed in a Baum washer at the coke works, was loaded into the ovens from a charging car. The coke was discharged and quenched on a sloping bench and conveyed to a screening plant for separation into large blast furnace coke and domestic coke nuts. The plant changed over to the production of foundry coke in 1959.
Steam was raised in hand fired Lancashire boilers later fitted with superheaters and mechanical stokers.
