Photograph of Thrislington coke works (c. 1897-1954) which were formerly owned by Henry Stobart and Company, later a subsidiary of Pease and Partners Limited.
Washed coal from a Luhrig washery at Thrislington colliery was loaded into the ovens by stamp charging and the coke was discharged through a Darby quencher onto a sloping bench and loaded into rail wagons with forks.
Two unusual features of the plant were that a single chimney served the ovens and coke boilers (Lancashire type and the primary cooling of the gas was by direct contact with ammonia liquor (Carl Still system) in the 100 feet tall cooler tower. The oven brickwork and the coke bench were in [poor condition when taken over by the National Coal Board and due to distortion of the oven walls "cake" charging of the ovens was difficult.
