St Anthony's Girls' School

The Sisters of Mercy established a community in Green Street, Sunderland, in 1843. In 1902 St Anthony's Grammar School was established and in 1921 a Sixth Form created. At the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 the school moved to its present site on Thornhill Terrace. In 1972 the school became a direct grant comprehensive and in 1976 a voluntary aided comprehensive. The school takes girls aged 11-18 and currently has 1300 pupils.

The History Club

History club was established in February 2001 so that Year 7 pupils could have the opportunity to do project work, access computers, and go on visits, beyond the restraints of the National Curriculum. In its first two terms, the club regularly attracted 30 pupils to work on a project on the Vikings, and a study of historical ghosts. Two visits were undertaken - one to the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle to see the 'Kings of the North Sea' exhibition, and one to Durham, where we went on a guided walk of the city entitled 'Ghosts and Grisly Death'. From September 2001 History Club was expanded to include Year 8 pupils. These girls will spend the year looking at Local History and then on to the Egyptians. History Club is run voluntarily one lunchtime every week by Miss Whatmore and Miss Wallis.
