An Historical Account of Volunteering in

North Tyneside.

Welcome to Impact - Action for Community Life.

IMPACT is part of North Tyneside volunteering organisation Voluntary Development Agency (VODA), based at 51 Nile Street, North Shields, NE29 0BG, England.  IMPACT is one of five Active Community Demonstration Projects set up by the Home Office to work more closely with the local community in North Tyneside.

The overall aim of the Active Community Demonstration Projects is to achieve a 'step change' on public involvement in Community Life.  In other words - to challenge and change people's perception about what is volunteering.  IMPACT provides an exciting opportunity to try new and innovative ways of engaging volunteers and creating volunteering opportunities.

IMPACT offers volunteering opportunities to people age 11 onwards.  The opportunities vary greatly depending upon the interests and skills of the person.  Once this is determined they are matched to a volunteering opportunity of their choice.

Volunteering opportunities during 2001 - 2002 vary from the more traditional volunteering roles such as helping out in a charity shop or a luncheon club to the more unusual - fire fighting, DJing, football coaching, working on an archaeological dig, graffiti art and I.C.T. to mention but a few.

The choice is yours!

TOMORROW'S HISTORY AND THE HISTORY OF VOLUNTEERING PROJECT.

IMPACT, with the help of funding from the Tomorrow's History Project, has produced a booklet on the history of volunteering in North Tyneside.  All contributions have been made by volunteers throughout North Tyneside to give examples of current day opportunities.  The pamphlet contains informative and inspiring information ranging from short stories and anecdotes to poetry and photographs.

Many volunteers have contributed to this piece of work and thanks must go to them for their time and effort.  The pamphlet will serve as a resource tool for anyone who wants to hear about volunteering both in the past and in the present.
