Chester-le-Street Heritage Group

Chester-le-Street in 1891

Chester-le-Street Heritage Group was formed in 1986, with the main activities of the group being the study of local history issues, with particular relevance placed upon Chester-le-Street and the surrounding area.

The group aims to share and research knowledge relating to the history of the town throughout the ages.

Their project  concerns the town as it was in 1891.

An analysis of the records of the census taken in that year gives us an idea of

  • The size of the town
  • The age of the population
  • Where they came from
  • Typical families
  • Occupations

An exhibition held at Chester-le-Street Library in November 2001 showed the groups  findings and used photographs and artefacts from the local community along with material from regional archives.

The group meets fortnightly in Chester-le-Street Library on Wednesday evenings. Further information may be obtained from the library on 0191 3882015.
