This parish church was built 1719, possibly by William Etty, as Sunderland's first parish church. It is now a grade one listed building, looked after by the Churches Conservation Trust and Sunderland Old Township Heritage Society. It is opened on special occasions and for public viewings.
The 1735 apse was paid for by the incumbent, Daniel Newcombe, extending the original square-ended sanctuary. The roof was reconstructed by Thomas Wilson and west gallery added in 1803. The windows were reglazed in 1803 and c1900. Flemish bond brick with some original tuck pointing; dark grey slate roof. Clasping aisles to West tower and nave. Baroque style.
Clock of 1856 in tall blind arches of third stage; top stage of tower has louvred belfry openings; corner spirelets on square plinths which are flanked by cyma-moulded brackets.
