Community Projects

The Tomorrow's History partnership involves not only libraries, archives and museums, but also the people of the North East in all twelve local authority areas: Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Redcar & Cleveland, South Tyneside, Stockton on Tees and Sunderland.

Over one hundred groups worked during 2001 on projects ranging from small-scale local history days to larger projects involving a number of partners and innovating in the areas of community history content, use of Information Technology and skills development. A small team of community project workers assisted the groups and helped them to publish their projects.

Community Projects:Middlesborough
Banks and Lanes-Bridging the Years
This project produced a book of memories of West Middlesbrough.

Coulby Newham Youth and Community Centre
This project has created two murals of Coulby Newham and Hemlington. The first shows the old agricultural lansdcape and the second shows key buildings on a modern landscape of housing.

Erimus-Wa'alele
This project has contributed to our website. The group has restored the Hawaiian outrigger canoe that was donated to the people of Middlesbrough in 1978. The canoe had been outside the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum. Once restored the group then decided to set a challenge of crossing the Channel in the summer of 2001. This was sucessfull and raised funds for local charities.

Hemlington History Group.
This project has produced a book on the development and history of Hemlington from rural hamlet to modern suburb.

Joe Walton's Youth and Community Centre
This project produced a booklet and display exploring the 95 Years of the Club.

Linx detached Youth Work Project Ltd.
'Looking Back in Time' this project created a stained glass panel. The central panel was a copy of the Tithe map of Hemlington. The outer panels are made and designed by young people depicting aspects of Hemlington now.

North Ormesby Community History Group
This project produced a booklet of memories, recipes and school log book entries for World War I and II.

Remember Middlesbrough Society
This project produced a book 'Acklam Snapshots' using photos to show the development of Acklam form closed village to modern suburb.

St.Cuthbert's Church, Ormesby
This project researched the stories behind the names listed on the World War I War Memorial in the churchyard.
