The
Banks and Lanes Group
The
Banks and Lanes Group was formed in 1995 to bring together people of all
ages who are interested in the history of West Middlesbrough, whether
they be residents, former residents or newcomers to the area. We chose
the name "Banks and Lanes" because the district we cover extends from
the banks of the River Tees near Newport Bridge to Whinney Banks and
Fleet Bridge. In between, you'll find some of the old lanes of
Middlesbrough; West Lane, Green Lane and Ayresome Green Lane. The
area includes the old villages of Newport, Ayresome and Old Linthorpe
as well as the modern estates of Whinney Banks and Acklam Garden City.
It is a part of the town which has seen many changes over the last two
hundred years, and quite a few changes within living memory.
Our
Contribution to "Tomorrow's History"
The
group has been meeting in St. Martin's Church Hall, Whinney Banks twice
a month for ten months each year. As well as studying the history of
West Middlesbrough from historic records, old newspapers and old
photographs, we have also been collecting memories from people who
remember the area. When the "Tomorrow's History" project was launched,
we decided to get some more memories and photographs together. A
selection of the memories we collected have been published in a book as
part of the "Tomorrow's History" project. The book is called "Bridging
the Years", and was published in 2001. We hope to continue digging into
our area's history and perhaps publish more books in the future.
More
About the Group
Anyone
who would like further information about the Banks and Lanes Group
should contact:
Jenny Braddy on 01642 816903
or you can e-mail us at
j.braddy@amserve.net.
We
are always interested in hearing from people with memories or old
photographs of Middlesbrough.
Bridging the Years
This is
the title of our book of local memories. The book is 48 pages long and
contains more than 20 photographs along with memories from more than 30
people. Some of these memories were provided by members of the group:
others were collected when group members went out and interviewed local
people. These recollections stretch over a span of time from the First
World War to the 1960's and 70's, concentrating on the inter-war years.
We hope they give a flavour of our little bit of Middlesbrough during
those years, and that they can help to bridge the gap between the
present and a world which is slowly fading into history.
