| Tow Law History Group was formed in 1989 by
members of an evening class organised by the W.E.A .(Workers Education
Association). The group meet in the church hall of St Phillip and
James, Church Lane, Tow Law. Their meetings are held fortnightly on
Monday nights at 7.00pm, although this is sometimes not possible
because other activities take precedence.
The society are a small working group who research and actively
support other community projects; giving talks to schools, church
groups, or slide shows from their extensive collection of photographs.
Over the past ten years the group have also produced a number of
publications.
"Looking Back" - a selection of old photographs of Tow Law, to
celebrate the new millennium £4.50
"Whence and Wither" - a history of Tow Law by the doctor charged
with cleaning the tow up in the mid 20th Century £2.00
"Memoirs of Tow Law"- a graphic description of Tow Law during the
1940's and 1950's £1.50
"Star Gazer"- an account of the life of the Rev. T.H.E.C. Espin who
was vicar of tow Law during the early 1900's and who was also a
successful amateur astronomer £1.50

The group draw their membership not only from Tow Law but also from
an area stretching from Durham to Stanhope. They even have two members
in America. The area they cover extends from Tow Law in the west
through the Deerness Valley to Ushaw moor and New Brancepeth in the
east of County Durham.
The society is completely independent with its own constitution and
they rely solely on their members efforts to finance their own
projects.
The group are actively involved in the Weardale Society and Durham
County Councils "Yesterday Belongs To You" project.
