Wheatley Hill History Club

The History of the Thornley Mining Company

Wheatley Hill History Club was set up in 1995 to collect and share memories of a proud past.  Over the years they have collected over 1000 photographs, set up regular monthly meetings with a growing membership, had a book of photographs published by Durham County Council, transcribed and sold copies of the Wheatley Hill Census Returns from 1841 - 1891, produced a quarterly newsletter for our members, sold a calendar every year and held a trip to somewhere of historical interest each August.  The club has also staged several photograph exhibitions in the local library and Durham County Hall and members have given talks to local organisations. The group enjoys good relations with all other  local groups including the Church and Primary School.

The History Club has the potential to make the elderly feel important and raise their self esteem in their role as "authorities" on our past and they rely on them to share their memories.  The Club also hopes to be able to educate future generations.

The club meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month (except August and December) in Wheatley House, Woodlands Avenue, Wheatley Hill.  Membership is not necessary, but members do receive a quarterly newsletter about the working of the History Club.

The clubs latest project is an exhibition charting the history of the Thornley Coal Company, it is hoped that the information collected will then complied into a book  to be published in 2002.   Once again, the project will involve interested people from all over the world in word processing, providing advice, proof reading, researching etc and they hope will be a successful publication, which they can leave for future generations.

For more information on the exhibition can be found at Thornley Coal Company
